BATON ROUGE, LA — March 1, 2018 — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced today that the City-Parish’s Spring 2018 Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium, 1750 Foss Street.
All residents of East Baton Rouge Parish are invited to drop off their household hazardous materials for safe disposal by entering the drive-through, drop-off site from Scenic Highway at Foss Street, with police officers on hand to keep traffic moving steadily. This event is only for the collection of residential household hazardous materials. City-Parish officials will be unable to accept materials generated by businesses and other commercial sources, or residents who live outside East Baton Rouge Parish.
The following household hazardous materials will be accepted: fertilizers, pool chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, gasoline, cleaning products, oil & latex paint and paint products, automobile tires, auto products including used oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, diesel, oil and fuel filters; cooking oil, fluorescent tubes, ballasts and compact fluorescent bulbs; lead acid, nickel-cadmium and alkaline batteries; stereos and televisions; and computers, computer monitors, computer components, and fax machines. In order to be accepted, liquids should be in labeled, closed containers holding five gallons or less.
Items that will not be accepted include: ammunition, explosives, fireworks, non-residential waste, radioactive devices (smoke/fire/detectors), large gas cylinders such as helium, acetylene or Freon, Styrofoam peanuts, school lab waste, fire extinguishers, appliances (white goods) or furniture, copiers, construction and demolition debris, asbestos-containing building materials, and biomedical hazardous materials.
Additionally, although latex paint is not considered hazardous, it is one of the materials most often brought to the collection for disposal. As an alternative, residents can safely dispose of small amounts of left-over latex paint by mixing it with equal parts kitty litter, allowing it to dry out, and then placing the can in their garbage cart. Habitat Restore also accepts full or partially full cans of latex paint or stain and full cans of oil paint year-round. For more information on paint recycling or disposal, please call (225) 355-1895.
All items will be checked by officials at the event to confirm they are among the household hazardous materials that are accepted. For a complete list of acceptable items, please visit www.brla.gov/recycle.
Over the past 28 years, East Baton Rouge Parish residents have safely disposed of more than 3 million pounds of household hazardous materials through local collection events. Although household hazardous materials comprise only one percent of the waste stream, they can negatively impact almost every aspect of the environment, polluting the air, water, and soil.
