Statement by Mayor Broome

Baton Rouge, La. — March 14, 2022 — Over the past several days, East Baton Rouge Parish experienced several tragedies that cut to the core of this community. Some incidents were alleged accidental shootings involving children and a pregnant mother. There were also alleged acts of intentional violence — one involving a Southern University student and another that stemmed from a dispute in Gardere. Another tragedy was an alleged act of domestic violence against a mother and her son. My heart goes out to all the victims in these incidents, and I ask you to keep their families in your prayers.

Intentional violence is completely unacceptable, and our law enforcement agencies will quickly bring perpetrators to justice. Our work to reduce violence in East Baton Rouge Parish continues as we partner with law enforcement agencies and community groups. This work includes a focus on domestic violence in our community — we must help victims connect with resources to protect them and their families. The Capital Area Family Justice Center has a 24-hour crisis line at 225-389-3001.

In regards to accidental shootings, the recent incidents are a stark reminder why every gun owner must be vigilant about firearm safety and proper storage.
