Free Rides for COVID-19 Vaccines & New Pop-Up Clinic Initiative

BATON ROUGE, La. – March 31, 2021 – Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and HealthyBR announced two new initiatives today to connect underserved residents in East Baton Rouge Parish with COVID-19 vaccines. The two initiatives follow the recommendations of Mayor Broome’s Vaccine Equity Taskforce.

“Our community in Baton Rouge is grateful for this essential collaboration between our city, Uber, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, Relief Health, the Louisiana Primary Care Association and our hospitals,” said Mayor Broome. “This spirit of collaboration is not only providing our community with access to much-needed vaccines, but also transportation to vaccination appointments. These are important next steps in our work to ensuring the equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

Free Rides for COVID-19 Vaccines

Mayor Broome and HealthyBR are partnering with Uber and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation to help provide transportation for residents seeking COVID-19 vaccinations. The initiative will offer up to 2 roundtrip rides so EBR residents can get to and from vaccine appointments at approved locations.

Residents in need of a ride will have to make an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine at one locations below and request the Uber promo code when making the appointment:

“We are proud to support the City of Baton Rouge's efforts to significantly boost access to COVID-19 vaccines by providing transportation to and from vaccine appointments,” said Trevor Theunissen, Director of Public Affairs at Uber. “Throughout this pandemic we’ve maintained operations to provide essential services to the people of East Baton Rouge Parish and have taken multiple steps to help ensure that safety is at the heart of everything we’ve done. This is just the latest effort in our ongoing commitment to provide communities we serve with support they need during this unprecedented time.”

“As the COVID-19 vaccine is becoming increasingly available across Louisiana we know that transportation remains a key barrier for many who would otherwise sign up,” said Michael Tipton, President of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation. “That is why we’re proud to partner with Healthy BR and providers throughout the Baton Rouge region to make free rides available to and from vaccine appointments for those who need them. We are committed to helping as many people as possible get vaccinated to protect the health of our community.”

Quantities are limited and will be offered while supplies last. Individuals must apply the promo code 10MVBRLA in the Wallet section of the Uber app prior to requesting the ride within Baton Rouge to redeem the discount. Discount valid for up to $25 off maximum of four (4) UberX or XL trips that begin or end within the Parish of East Baton Rouge. This offer cannot be combined with other offers. One-time use only for promo code and can only be used at select locations. Non-transferable. Offer expires at 11:55 p.m. ET on September 30, 2021. Discount does not apply to tips. Offer and terms subject to change.

COVID-19 Vaccine Pop-Up Clinic Initiative

Mayor Broome and HealthyBR are partnering with Relief Telemed to offer COVID-19 vaccines at pop-up clinics in underserved communities of East Baton Rouge Parish. About 100 or more vaccines will be offered at each clinic depending on demand.

The first pop-up clinic will be Thursday, April 1, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Greater Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, 5820 Evangeline Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70805. Anyone interested in hosting a vaccine clinic through this initiative can email healthybr@brla.gov or fill out an interest form here https://airtable.com/shrD8aQN7N0iAgCeZ.

"Relief is extremely exciting about our partnership with HealthyBR and the City of Baton Rouge Getting as many members of the community vaccinated as possible is critical for our society and our economy to return back to normal,” said Vishal Vasanji, Co-founder & CEO of Relief Health. Relief fundamentally believes in delivering healthcare to the patient, and this is a great opportunity for Relief and its partners to bring the vaccination to the people."
