BATON ROUGE, La. – February 20, 2021 – As Louisiana faced a historic winter storm this week, the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) Air Support Unit made a critical blood delivery utilizing air support resources. This transport was made on Thursday due to icy road conditions and the time-sensitive nature of the request. The Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness expeditiously coordinated the delivery, in which BRPD flew to a blood center in Shreveport, obtained the blood platelets, and delivered them directly to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center’s Bluebonnet location.
“During times of crisis, it is important we respond with a ‘Whole Community’ approach. Thank you to MOHSEP, BRPD, and the Region 2 Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Coalition (HEPC) for working together to make this precious delivery,” said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome.
“Our healthcare team values and is extremely thankful for our relationship with MOHSEP, law enforcement, the Mayor’s Office and all of our community response partners. We stand ready to care for you and the community at a moment’s notice, and are appreciative of BRPD’s assistance in helping us fulfill our mission this past Thursday. As a liaison between our healthcare providers and MOHSEP, I am honored to work alongside them and the other dedicated agencies, who are passionate about serving our community and often find creative solutions to address challenges in disasters,” said Alyson Hughes, Region 2 Administrative Regional Coordinator for the Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Coalition (HEPC).
Anyone can participate in a blood drive at one of Baton Rouge General’s three campuses. All donors will receive a free antibody test, T-shirt and a meal ticket to the cafeteria and Java General coffee shop.
