2020 Cyber Security Virtual Workshop Announced

BATON ROUGE, La. — October 1, 2020 — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome issued a proclamation Thursday recognizing October 2020 as Cyber Security Awareness Month — an annual reminder for residents to take simple, measurable steps to change their behavior and protect themselves online.

“Technology can be a wonderful thing, helping us operate government more efficiently, deliver services more effectively, and make decisions more transparently,” Mayor Broome said. “However, as more services are available online, the more cyber criminals seek to take advantage of our residents, businesses, and agencies. Cyber Security Awareness Month is just one of the many ways we are working to keep residents safe, make our systems secure, and educate the public on how we can work together to accomplish these goals.”

As part of the City-Parish’s recognition of Cyber Security Awareness Month, Mayor Broome will host a virtual workshop from 6-7:30 p.m. October 20, 2020. The event, “A Safe and Secure Digital Baton Rouge,” will focus on the easy steps residents and businesses can take to be more aware of cyber security threats, protect their personal and professional data, and connect to the internet with confidence.

Participation in the workshop is free, but registration is required. To register, visit brla.gov/2020cybersecurity.

Throughout the month of October, residents can tune into the City-Parish’s Facebook page and Red Stick Ready social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter, where City-Parish technology and emergency preparedness staff will share helpful tips and resources that residents can use in their everyday lives to protect against cyber security threats.
