[ARCHIVED] MOHSEP Monitoring Tropical Storm Cristobal

Baton Rouge, La. – June 3, 2020 – The National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans is forecasting severe weather for East Baton Rouge Parish brought on by Tropical Storm Cristobal. The parish is under a Flash Flood Warning until Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) are closely monitoring the tropical storm.

Mayor Broome encourages Baton Rouge residents to monitor the progress of the storm and to have a plan in place to accommodate a severe weather event along with safety protocol amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our community should begin preparing for weather events throughout the course of hurricane season,” said Mayor Broome. “The coronavirus pandemic presents an additional layer of challenges and we need to take extra precautions in case of an emergency. This includes preparations for evacuation, shelter, and supplies.”

Residents should prepare for the 2020 Hurricane Season by making an emergency plan, gathering supplies, preparing their residences, and staying informed.

City-Parish officials and BREC Parks and Recreation will distribute sand and sandbags at eight sites throughout the parish.

Sand and sandbags are available at the following sites:

  • BREC Airline Highway Fairgrounds – 16072 Airline Highway
  • BREC Alsen Park – 601 Old Rafe Mayer Road
  • BREC Cadillac Street – 6117 Cadillac Street
  • BREC Doyles Bayou Park – 7801 Port Hudson-Pride Road
  • BREC Flannery Road Park – 801 S Flannery Road
  • BREC Hartley-Vey at Gardere Park – 1702 Gardere Lane
  • BREC Lovett Road Park – 13443 Lovett Road
  • BREC Memorial Stadium – 1702 Foss Street

Residents are urged to bring their own shovels to fill the sandbags.

The Mayor-President’s Office and MOHSEP will continue coordinating with the National Weather Service, parish municipalities, and local and state officials throughout the duration of the event.
