Baton Rouge, LA — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, Chief Murphy Paul and local community organizations announce the launch of Project ChildSafe Baton Rouge, an initiative designed to encourage responsible firearms ownership and secure storage of guns, as a part of Mayor Broome’s action plan for a safe, hopeful, and healthy Baton Rouge.
Project ChildSafe Baton Rouge is in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and will be a year-long effort to help prevent firearms accidents, thefts and misuse, including suicide. As part of this campaign, Mayor Broome is empowering local organizations to help spread messages about the importance of proper firearms storage and to distribute free firearm safety kits, including a gun lock, to local residents.
“Gun locks are a critical tool for responsible gun ownership,” said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. “A gun lock is a simple device that can save the life of a child and prevent a stolen or misplaced weapon from being misused.”
The media event coincides with a community-wide gun lock distribution event at the Baton Rouge Police Department from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. Locks will also be available throughout the year at all BRPD district precincts, community centers, local faith centers, and other community locations.

Baton Rouge Project ChildSafe is an NSSF program launched in 1999 to promote firearms safety through the distribution of safety education resources and free firearm safety kits, which include a cable-style gun lock. Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 38 million safety kits to gun owners.
Unsecured guns can pose an accident risk to children and create opportunities for theft and misuse, including suicide attempts. Keeping guns out of the wrong hands can be accomplished when gun owners put safeguards in place appropriate to their home and family circumstances. Proper storage can help prevent firearms from being stolen and used in crimes. It also helps prevent at-risk individuals from having access to them.
