BATON ROUGE, LA — July 18, 2019 — Today, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced that City-Parish crews are nearing completion with their survey of curbside storm debris following Hurricane Barry, with debris removal operations set to begin Monday, July 22.

Based on the initial findings from the surveys, it is believed that there is still more storm debris to be moved curbside. This start date is intended to provide residents with adequate time to identify any storm debris on their property and move it curbside. City-Parish officials encourage residents to clean up as quickly as possible.

“While we feel blessed that Hurricane Barry did not impact our community in the ways it was initially forecast, I will continue being proactive in responding to the needs of our citizens from the effects of the storm,” said Mayor-President Broome. “We moved with a great degree of urgency in both activating our storm debris contract and in evaluating the level of storm debris in our community, and now we will continue that posture in ensuring the removal of storm debris.”

Debris removal services will include all residential locations within the City of Baton Rouge and unincorporated areas of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Debris removal crews will be dispatched throughout Baton Rouge, and efforts will remain ongoing until all storm debris has been collected. Residents do not need to contact the City-Parish once their debris is placed curbside. City-Parish environmental specialists and debris monitors will be regularly assessing curbside debris removal needs and directing crews accordingly for collection.

City-Parish officials are strongly urging residents to place their storm debris curbside in accordance with the diagram below to ensure efficient collection. Storm debris should be clearly separated from regular garbage piles, such as household waste, which will be collected as part of regular City-Parish garbage and recycling collection services.

All storm debris should be placed as close to the curbside as possible – taking special care to not place debris or trash under electrical lines or near a water meter vault, fire hydrant, or any other above-ground utilities.

As a reminder, contractors hired by residents for storm debris removal, or renovations due to storm-related damages, are required under City-Parish ordinances to remove any storm debris from the premises. Residents are urged to ensure they are hiring licensed contractors, and the removal of any resulting storm debris is included in their contract.
