The Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control District (MARC) is responsible for maintaining a high level of service to the people of the parish for mosquito and rodent control. Thus, the District must be able to acquire, operate, and maintain the facilities, systems, and equipment which will allow highly trained personnel to provide these necessary services. In addition, the District must also provide a proactive approach in the fight against existing and newly introduced exotic diseases which are spread by mosquitoes and rodents.
The current facility, which is almost 40 years old, is no longer capable of efficiently supporting the current staff nor the necessary functions or activities of the District. In the future, more advanced analytical evaluation and laboratory procedures will require new infrastructure, additional personnel, and more technologically advanced systems.
The new facility includes the necessary infrastructure to allow our employees to efficiently provide the highest quality of services and greatly assist in providing the maximum protection from mosquitoes and rodents and the diseases they potentially could transmit to the residents of the Parish. An independent quality assurance evaluation of the project indicated that the new facility will provide the needs of the Parish for the next 30-50 years at a very competitive cost. The buildings of the new facility are approximately 64,000 sq. ft.; the square footage of the old facility buildings is almost half at approximately 34,000 sq. ft. The new facility also includes an aircraft hangar capable of holding three aircraft, a maintenance shop, aviation personnel offices, and a parts storage facility, which the old facility lacks.
