Mayor Broome Releases 2023 Open Data Policy Report

Baton Rouge, La. — February 2, 2024 — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome released the City-Parish’s 2023 Open Data Policy Report following the report’s presentation at the January 31 Metropolitan Council meeting. The annual report outlines the City-Parish’s efforts to implement its open data policy approved by Mayor Broome and the Metro Council in 2017.

The 2023 report highlights the City-Parish’s focus on leveraging data and analytics to improve transparency, services, and operational efficiencies in priority areas like blight remediation, public safety, stormwater, and drainage.

“Our City-Parish has made tremendous strides in our open data initiative since we adopted our open data policy in 2017,” said Mayor Broome. “Since then, we have worked to not only prioritize openness and transparency in our government operations, but in how we use our data to make data-driven decisions, implement innovative solutions, improve efficiency, and best serve the residents of East Baton Rouge Parish.”

In addition to its focus on the City-Parish’s successes in performance management and data-driven decision making over the past year, the report features details on new datasets and dashboards released to the public during the same timeframe, information on the 12.2 million rows of data now available across the City-Parish’s Open Data BR and EBRGIS platforms, and information on education and outreach activities designed to engage City-Parish staff and East Baton Rouge Parish residents in the work of the City-Parish’s open data initiatives.

About the Open Data Policy
The City-Parish’s Open Data Policy was established by Mayor Broome and unanimously adopted by the Metro Council in December 2017. It enacted an “open by default” mandate for all City-Parish data, designating the Department of Information Services as the lead agency responsible for policy implementation. The policy also established a Data Governance Committee comprising representatives from all City-Parish departments, incorporated requirements for City-Parish procurement and contracting, and requires an annual report on implementation progress.
