Baton Rouge, LA – The City of Baton Rouge is proud to announce the unveiling of the new street name formally known as E. Washington Street to Lorri Burgess Ave.
The Metropolitan Council voted unanimously on changing the current street name E. Washington St. to Lorri Burgess Ave.
Lorri Burgess has been a pillar in the community, most known for her service as a Metropolitan Council Member representing District 10, where she lived and dedicated most of her time. Burgess was elected to the Metropolitan Council in 1997, then becoming the first female African-American Mayor Pro Tempore, serving a total of 12 years on the Metropolitan Council. She also served as Chief Operating Officer for the Sickle Cell Association of South Louisiana.
In honor of the legacy Lorri Burgess leaves, a public unveiling of the new street sign is planned for Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a block party until 2:00 p.m. at the Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center, 950 E. Washington Street, Baton Rouge.This event will be community block party with FREE food, drinks, music, entertainment, spacewalk, games, face painting, etc.
