Baton Rouge, La – September 27, 2022 – Today, we engaged shelter and same-day housing providers in East Baton Rouge Parish for a discussion about collaborating on data and solutions for people experiencing homelessness. We had a productive conversation, sharing challenges and possible solutions for how to best transition individuals from encampments to safe and secure shelter. We left the meeting with clear action steps and next steps to better coordinate with the BR HOT Team, law enforcement and shelter providers. This is only the one step in a long-term strategy. As much as possible, Mayor Broome is committed to a housing-first model.
So far, we have invested in the following:
- We created the BR HOT Team in partnership with law enforcement and public health professionals to meet individuals where they are and connect them to resources.
- Our Emergency Rental Assistance Program has provided over $46 million in federal funds to families at risk of being evicted or even homeless.
- We’ve dedicated $500,000 in federal funds to provide temporary housing support for individuals after they experience a financial emergency.
