[ARCHIVED] Upcoming Summer of Hope Community Events

Every week, residents are encouraged to join Mayor Broome, Safe Hopeful Healthy BR, and partners at events taking place around Baton Rouge. Community Organizations interested in amplifying their events as a part of the Summer of Hope community calendar can submit their event details here.

  • Film Screening of Uncommon Allies and Panel Discussion, 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, Valdry Center at Southern University, 801 Harding Blvd.
A film about a Kansas City mother named Rosilyn Temple, who turned her pain of losing a son to violence into progress to help heal her community. Register at summerofhopebr.com.
  • Heal the Block, 4:30pm-7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 3955 Plank Rd. at the Old Chase Bank.
Each Saturday during Summer of Hope, the Baton Rouge Community Street Team is bringing hope, dinners, celebration, and community resources directly to streets, neighborhoods, and families that have experienced violence.

  • Community Crawfish Cook-Off, 5-8 p.m. Saturday, June 25; Galvez Plaza Downtown.
Presented by Orange Cloud Network and Mayor Pro Tem LaMont Cole. Free and open to the public. Vendors interested in participating can contact Mia Cummings at 225-389-7804.

  • Healthy Housing Forum, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd.
This forum is open to any landlords interested in working with Mayor Broome's office and the Housing 1st Alliance to address housing challenges. Panelists from the City of New Orleans and Acadiana Regional Coalition on Homelessness and Housing will discuss how to leverage adjudicated and vacant properties to provide more housing in the city. Landlords are also invited to join working groups to learn how to address blight, create a rental registry, and increase support for landlords and tenants.

  • Friday Night Movies on the Plaza, 7 p.m. Friday, June 24; Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd. The Karate Kid
Admission is free and open to the public. A food truck will be available for concessions. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

  • ReCast BR's 3rd Annual Resiliency Summit and the Bayou Soul Youth Literary Conference, June 27-28, Baton Rouge Community College.
Events will include “Trauma on the Land,” a community town hall and stage play honoring the legacy of the late Dr. Joyce M. Plummer and Jon Henriott and all those lost in the COVID-19 Pandemic. Visit brccf.org/recastbr to view the full agenda and to register.
