Mission statement
The mission of the East Baton Rouge Parish Historic Preservation Commission is to promote the preservation of the historic resources of the parish through the designation of individual properties and communities that have architectural, historical, or cultural value and should therefore by preserved for the benefit of the parish's people.
PURPOSE
The Historic Preservation Commission serves in advisory capacity only in recommending landmark and historic district designations, prepares and maintains inventory of all property within its jurisdiction, and recommends to the Metropolitan Council specific places, districts, sites, buildings, etc. to be designated as historic properties.
Certified Local Government
A Certified Local Government designation is intended to encourage communities to establish historic preservation programs at the local level. The program aims to foster neighborhood pride, to survey and inventory local historic properties, and to assist property owners in preserving their community's heritage. The National Park Service administers the program in coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office. Certification makes the city eligible for specialized technical assistance and programming from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Participation in the CLG program also makes the community eligible for federal grants provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior and administered by the State Historic Preservation Office.
